Project Description:

RPI West Hall Restoration

PROJECT OVERVIEW: This project involved a comprehensive exterior historic restoration of a 50,000-square-foot, 19th-century landmark building located on the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute campus. All work proceeded while the facility remained fully occupied.

RESTORATION APPROACH: The comprehensive restoration required full scaffolding of the north, south, and west elevations to safely access the aging façade. The project began with the removal of lead paint to prepare surfaces for subsequent restoration work.

ROOF AND UPPER ELEMENTS:  The slate mansard roofs were completely replaced with custom-fabricated copper flashings. Dormers received careful repairs with new aluminum windows installed. The upper brick cornice was repaired or replaced as needed, while both the main cornice and historic gutter system were rebuilt to original specifications.

MASONRY RESTORATION:  Masonry work included reconstruction of brick chimneys and deteriorated areas on each elevation, stone foundation restoration, and comprehensive wash-downs, grouting, and repointing throughout the exterior surfaces.

WINDOWS AND DOORS:  Original wood windows throughout most of the building underwent meticulous restoration. The project included the refurbishment of entry doors, the installation of new interior storm windows, wood consolidation where necessary, and the complete repainting of all exterior wood elements.

PROJECT EXECUTION:  This precisely coordinated restoration preserved the building's historic character while securing its structural integrity for future generations. All work was executed without disrupting the facility's daily operations.
