Project Description:

New York State Capitol Building

Roof Replacement, Restoration to Center Courtyard & Main Floor

Exterior courtyard NY State capital A LANDMARK RENEWED: The NYS Capitol, built between 1867 and 1899, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features a central open-air courtyard space approximately 125 feet by 80 feet in size. The courtyard houses the copper-clad Hawk Street Passage and adjacent restaurant area, with the remaining courtyard serving as the roof over vital basement infrastructure.

ADDRESSING CRITICAL DETERIORATION: Persistent leaks into the basement below the Courtyard, along with deterioration of the Hawk Street Passage copper elements, necessitated comprehensive restoration. Our team was commissioned not only to resolve these structural issues but to reimagine the courtyard as an accessible public space.

AUTHENTIC HISTORICAL RESTORATION: The project involved the complete removal and replacement of roofing throughout the courtyard area. Malden bluestone pavers—the material originally specified for this space in the 19th century—were incorporated in a pattern inspired by existing stone layouts within the Capitol Building. Custom limestone planters topped with zinc-tin-coated copper elegantly conceal ventilation systems while enhancing the courtyard's aesthetic appeal.

METICULOUS COPPER CRAFTSMANSHIP: All original copper elements were carefully replaced, including flat and standing seam roofs, wall cladding, downspouts, and intricate ornamental details. This historically faithful restoration matched original profiles while incorporating modern thermal insulation improvements, adhering rigorously to the Department of the Interior's Secretary's Standards for Preservation.

REVEALING HIDDEN BEAUTY: Previously sealed window and door openings within the passage were reopened, restoring visual connections to the courtyard that had been absent for decades. These architectural interventions dramatically improved natural light and circulation throughout the space.

TRANSFORMATION COMPLETE: This comprehensive project transformed what had become a purely utilitarian space into a welcoming public area adorned with pavers, planters, and lush vegetation—finally realizing the original architectural vision. The restoration has preserved the structural integrity of this National Historic Landmark while revitalizing its heart, ensuring the Capitol's legacy continues for generations to come.
